I'd Be Laughing

'I'd Be Laughing' was written in 1977.

The version seen above, which stays faithful to the original melody and 'feel', was created in May/June 2026.
"Maybe I won't feel this way tomorrow.
Maybe in time I won't recall the sorrow.
Maybe you're right to say she's gonna regret it.
Maybe I'm wrong to cry when I ought to forget it.

Maybe you're right, maybe I'm nat,
I should turn off the tears like you turn off the tap,
If it was only as simple as that,
I'd be laughing.

Maybe I won't feel this way much longer.
Maybe in time I won't recall the hunger.
Maybe you're right to say she's not for me.
Maybe I'm wrong to love her so helplessly.

I may be wrong, you may be right,
I should switch off my heart like you switch off the light,
If love was only that black and white
I'd be laughing.

Oh, you're right I'm a fool for hanging on
When, to her, I'm just an also-ran.
And you're right when you say I was only a boy
And a woman like her needs a man.
Oh, you're so right and I'm so wrong
And you can laugh all over your face.
But I can't help but wonder what might have been
If you'd been here in my place.

Maybe the time has come to put her behind me.
But that's much easier said than done with so much to remind me.
Maybe the time has come to find a new lover
But I'm no fun to be with any more when my heart's with another.

Oh, we had such good time, what could have gone wrong
Oh, if things were that bad, well, she never let on.
Honey, if you were just out for some fun,
I ain't laughing.

Maybe you're right, maybe I'm wrong,
And soon all the heartache inside will be gone.
If only those comforting words did their job,
I'd be laughing."
This version was recorded in February 2018.
