Percy Pea

In 1979, the gentleman in charge of Safari Records asked me to write some songs to accompany a children's book called The Garden Gang.

I wrote 6 or 7 and was back with him within the week. He was delighted with the results. Unfortunately for me, 'The Garden Gang' project never took off, at least, not when I was with Safari Records.

I discovered the old lyrics from one of the songs this month. And, hey presto, here it is!
"He hasn't got an enemy,
He's everybody's friend.
But Percy's got this problem
And it drives us round the bend.

His memory is hazy,
Concentration is a strain,
He'd forget his head if it was loose,
He's such a scatterbrain!

Dear old Percy, Percy Pea,
A smashing chap, but oh dear me.
A pity about his memory,
Dear old Percy, Percy Pea!

He washes his hair in household bleach,
His socks in Ovaltine.
He mows the lawn with the hoover,
Cleans his teeth with shaving cream.

He wears his woollies when it's hot,
And sunbathes in the rain.
He combs his hair with a lavatory brush,
He's such a scatterbrain!

Dear old Percy, Percy Pea,
A smashing chap, but oh dear me,
A pity about his memory,
Dear old Percy, Percy Pea!

We've tied knots in his handkerchief
To jog his feeble brain;
But he soon forgot why they were there,
And undid them again.

The last I heard of Percy,
He was still at home in bed.
He'd forgotten to wake up
And was fast asleep instead!

Dear, oh, dear, oh, dearie me,
We must do something and quickly!
He could forget to breathe, you see,
And wind up Percy, R.I.P.!
Drastic action must be taken,
If our pea-brained nincompoop,
Is not to end up just another
Bowl of thick pea soup!

If he has anything to do
Which must not slip his mind,
He must write it in a notebook,
Of a very special kind!

Oh, dear old Percy, Percy Pea,
We're going to cure your malady.
If you forget where you should be,
Look it up in your diary!

Dear old Percy, Percy Pea,
Now he's as sharp as you and me.
Sharper even, possibly,
With the aid of a diary!

Dear old Percy, Percy Pea,
No longer scatterbrained, you see.
What a memory has he,
With his pocket diary!

Dear old Percy, dear old Percy,
Dear old Percy, Percy Pea!"
