Paper Man

Inspired by rediscovered lyrics I wrote in the 1970s, I recorded this in September 2026.
"Reads so well in black and white,
'Comin' to get you in the dead of night!'
Does not deal in shade and light,
Our overlords want the world afright.

Banner headline, big bold type,
Propaganda spin and hype.
Hail the leader, degrade the ruled,
Delude the youth and abuse the fooled!

Paperman! Paperman!
Bias prized, facts be damned!
Got the whole world in his hand,
Better not mess with the paperman!

As long as it pays and the victims suffer,
Endorse the war and debase the lover.
Whoever disagrees, expresses doubt,
Cancel him and take him out!

Paperman! Paperman!
Cover-up, redact and facts be damned!
Got us all in the palm of his hand,
Better not mess with the paperman.

Doesn't hold power to account,
When was justice paramount?
'Do unto others as you'd have them do'
Is now no more than a joke to the chosen few.

Paperman! Paperman!
Narrative tendered on demand.
Never once took a principled stand.
When truth's in vogue he'll buck the trend!

Paperman! Paperman!
Fantasy favored, facts be damned!
Why would he bother with the common man,
When he's got the backing of the hidden hand?

Paperman led me astray.
Could never figure out the state of play.
Fought for the bosses and made it pay,
Collect your wages and be on your way!
You're gonna get yours come judgment day."
