The Harlequin

Wrote 'The Harlequin' when I was a student, 1972 perhaps.

The cover version was created in June 2026.
"He may bring you fairy smiles.
He may bring you dreams.

All he brings me is a sad refrain,
Ending in tears.

You tell him you are still a prisoner of
Memories you thought you'd outgrown,
And say that you need the time to rebuild,
What you've been led to believe was your home.

And thinking of him as a loving friend,
Whose laughter is there at your whim,
You could never overhear the silences,
Where a gentle heart is breaking,
The Harlequin

Singing you a happy paradise,
Dancing in your smiles;
But within,
But within,
Crying down a magic rainbow,
The Harlequin.

I who have nothing to give
And ask for nothing in return,
I only can make believe,
You slowly must learn.

Tip-toe softly he's only sleeping,
Tender hush the fragile hymn.
Quick away no time for feelings,
Do you know the Harlequin?"
